Lone Worker Policy
Strict Health & Safety Guidelines
Commitment to Health & Safety
Objective
The objective of this Lone Worker Policy is to minimize risks to the health, safety, and well-being of employees who work alone or in isolated conditions. This policy ensures compliance with Canadian occupational health and safety laws and demonstrates our commitment to protecting staff members in all work environments.
Scope
This policy applies to all employees of Ablemen Protection Service who work alone or in remote locations.
Policy Statement
Management will conduct risk assessments for all locations where lone working may occur and implement control measures to ensure employee safety. Employees will receive the necessary training and equipment to perform their roles safely while working alone.
While working alone is generally safe, emergency situations can pose increased risks. This policy outlines procedures and precautions to protect employees in such scenarios.
Legal Framework
This policy complies with the following Canadian occupational health and safety legislation:
- Canada Labour Code, Part II (for federally regulated businesses).
- Provincial legislation, including:
- WorkSafeBC regulations (British Columbia).
- Occupational Health and Safety Code (Alberta).
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) (Ontario).
- Other applicable provincial and territorial laws.
Risk Assessments
Management will conduct and document a risk assessment for all lone working environments. The assessment will consider:
- Safe access and exit from the location.
- Fire safety and emergency protocols.
- Availability of communication tools (e.g., mobile phones, two-way radios, or lone worker safety apps).
- Training and awareness of emergency procedures.
- First aid resources on-site or within reach.
Risk assessments will be reviewed periodically or whenever there are changes in the work environment.
Lone Worker Safety Measures
Employees working alone must adhere to the following safety measures:
Communication:
- Maintain regular contact with a supervisor or designated point of contact.
- Use a lone worker device or app to report location and status periodically.
- Ensure mobile phones are charged and operational.
Emergency Preparedness:
- Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures, including evacuation routes and fire alarms.
- Know how to access first aid resources in the event of an injury or illness.
Training:
- All employees working alone must complete training on workplace safety, risk assessment, and emergency response procedures.
Incident Reporting:
- Report all incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions immediately to the supervisor.
Prohibited Lone Work Activities
Lone working is not permitted in the following high-risk scenarios:
- Confined spaces with inadequate ventilation.
- Environments involving toxic, flammable, or hazardous materials.
- Tasks that require lifting or handling objects too heavy for one person.
- Activities involving physical intervention or security measures without appropriate backup.
